Charles Novia bombs MTV Base list as ‘scandalous’
Controversial Nollywood film maker, Charles Novia has joined Chidi Mokeme and singer, Iyanya to
berate the MTV Base Top 20 Naija Songs of All Time aired on cable TV
station on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in commemoration of Nigeria’s 54th
Independence anniversary.
Novia,
in a series of messages posted on his Twitter account faulted the
authenticity of the list, describing it as scandalous and lacking in
merit.
He also questioned why MTV Base and not indigenous stations like Hip TV and Sound City is the one to put such a list together. According to him, the exclusion of acts like Remedies, OJB, Paul Play Dairo and a few others is disrespectful of their contributions towards building the music industry.
1.
I agree with Chidi Mokeme on his points about the contentious MTV Base
list of so-called 20 Naija songs of all time. It’s scandalous

2.
Whoever compiled that list must be a teenager or someone frozen in
time. But that’s what we get when History is off our curriculum though

3.
An imperialist media organ finally exposes its hidden agenda; brainwash
the youths into thinking they have no past; ‘Naija music’ is new?
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
4.
Even Iyanya has a point. 3 years after its release ‘Kukere’ still gets
the dancefloors hot. An African classic, even in years 2 come

5.
Even if MTV Base has it’s templates for judging such, it smacks of
arrogant disrespect for the progenitors of present day Naija music
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
6.
Without the likes of Remedies, Ruff, Rugged n Raw, Paul Play, OJB etc
the new Naija music would have been stillborn and amorphous
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
7.
And no one should argue that ‘Naija’ is a new coinage for Nigeria. It’s
been in use since the mid-80s. No one at MTV researched jack

8.
I know they might argue that its based on videos they have in stock?
So, if that is the case, use a different tag ; not ‘all time’.
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
9.
Now, this would have been ignored by many if it wasn’t seen as an
attempt to re-write a glorious musical past many know and love.
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014

This kind of faux pas gets people sacked in other climes. Nigeria’s
heroes past transcends the present crop of crotch-clutching musicians
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
11. Perhaps we need Hip Tv or Soundcity to set records straight? Aren’t they the indigenous ‘Proudly Naija’ music channel?
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
12
And d Culture Ministry to also butt in with an input. Conduct a public
poll by voting or something. Then we would have an authentic list.
— charles novia (@charlesnovia) October 3, 2014
13. Nuff said. And my opinion, even if it tallies with yours, is basically my opinion. Respect.
